Milestone lists are built from what a committee agrees on. This instrument was built from what hundreds of thousands of real children actually did — then tested for reliability, validated as a psychometric scale2, and analyzed with Stanford's Language and Cognition Lab to understand how developmental areas relate to each other over time3.

The finding that changed how we measure

In the first year, developmental areas move together so tightly that being ahead in one means being ahead in all of them. That coupling drops sharply across the first 12 months, and the areas begin to follow their own timelines.3 It's why a single, clear number is the honest read early on — and why separate area scores only start to mean something later.

Babbling is built early, then hands off to First words (11–30 months). Babbling doesn't disappear because something went wrong — it recedes because it has been replaced by speech. Once a child talks, we stop asking whether she babbles.

Walking · 15–39 months

Walking has no successor. Once a child walks she keeps walking — the skill refines into running, stairs and jumping rather than being handed off. Its window stays open far longer, because there's always a next level of the same thing.

This is why a check-in beats a checklist: a list keeps asking about milestones a child has already outgrown. The check-in only ever asks about the windows that are open right now.

What this is — and isn't. The Kinedu Assessment is a developmental surveillance tool: it surfaces a child's strengths and next steps.
